Indigo Eco Warriors

Our cloth nappies

We actively promote the use of cloth nappies here at Indigo ELC. Over the years, we have trialled and tested a range of modern cloth nappies to find the nappy deisgn that works best for us and after plenty of trial and error- we have designed our own!

All our nappies are laundered offsite at a laundry to hospitality standards- allowing us to offer a high standard of hygiene and allows us to continue to focus on what matters most- spending time with the children.

We send children home in a biodegradable nappy at home time to ensure families are not left having to wash cloth nappies at home.

We also accomodate families wanting to bring their own disposable, biodegradable or cloth nappies if they choose to.

We sell our gorgeous line of cloth nappies to the wider community and are in the process of establishing a cloth nappy cleaning service for families who love the idea of using cloth nappies but do not want to launder them at home themselves.

Our cloth wipes

We only use cloth wipes on childrens faces and hands throughout the day. We see this as incredibly important as it limits chemical exposure for children and is also a great alternative for children with various skin related allergies. Disposable wipes are actually unregulated in Australia- meaning that manufacturers do not need to list the harsh chemicals that are used- how terrible is that!

We continue to rally for cloth wipes use in and outside the service not only for it’s eco friendly benefits but also for limiting chemcial exposure to younf children.

Our veggie gardens, worm farm, compost and beehive

We love our mini farm here at Indigo. We ensure we are limiting waste by throwing our food scraps into the worm farm instead. We then use the amazing worm wee to fertilise our gardens. We keep our worms extra happy (and reduce a stinky smell) by not throwing any meat, dairy or citrus into the worm farm. We are in our veggie garden daily and we love tending to our plants and learning about the bees and how they help our gardens thrive.

Our chooks are very loved and we collect eggs daily and offer them to families to take home. We actively promote sustainability here at Indigo and help to create and support little ECO WARRIORS who LOVE the earth and want to nurture and protect our beautiful planet.

Winners of the ‘Reducing Resource Footprint’ category award

Indigo ELC are proud winners of the 2018 ‘Reducing Resource Footprint’ category as awarded by the NSW Early Childhood Environmental Education Network. We earned this award through being able to save up to 52,000 disposable nappies from ending up in landfil EVERY YEAR- how incredible is that!

Our plant-based menu

We offer an award winning plant-based menu. This plant based menu saves dozens of animals from being slaughtered each year and dramatically reduces our resource footprint through a reduction in water use, gasses, etc.

We have also used our public platform to actively promote healthy eating and plant based food within our wider community- with many like mindede ECEC services and families reaching out to us for support with their own plant based journeys.

Indigo Wild Adventures

Our Indigo Wild program actively promotes a deep connection with our natural world- an important value to instill with children, the future guardians of our world. Children go on all sorts of Wild Adventures into the bush, beach, parks, community gardens and animal enclosures providing a fantastic opportunity to grow children’s confidence and appreciation of the wild.

Our nature based playgrounds

Our playgrounds have been purpose built to maximise a NATURAL enviornment. That means no fake grass, limited plastic resources and a heavy emphasis on dirt, sand, water and plenty of bug catching. Our playgrounds have gained a lot of recognition in our early childhood community with many services reaching out to us for support and advice in redesigning their own playgrounds.

We offer a free flowing indoor outdoor program throughout the day to maximise outdoor time and as a result, we are able to provide an authentic play-based, child-directed environment. The benefits of this style of environment is evident in relaxed children who are able to deeply engage in play with their peers- building strong school readiness skills with an emphasis on soft skills such as turn taking, problem solving and emtoional regulation.

We use recycled paper products

We purchase ALL of our tissues, toilet paper and paper towel from ‘Who Gives a Crap’- an AMAZING company who make ALL of their products with environmentally friendly products and donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets for those in need. To date, they have already donated 1.2 million dollars to charity and saved A LOT of trees, water and energy. For more information about ‘Who gives a Crap’ please visit www.whogivesacrap.org
